There are plenty of volunteer opportunities at the Dismas Houses. Community volunteers play an important role in helping our ex-offenders reach their goals by the interaction and support they provide. The Dismas House receives constant visitors, cooking dinner, helping with job placement, counseling and advising, and offering friendship to the residents.
Dinner Volunteers A significant factor in the success of the Dismas program is local volunteers who visit nightly to prepare and share dinner with the residents. Around the dinner table, Dismas residents gain new social and communication skills. We encourage individuals, couples, and groups to share in the task of preparing a meal. Tutors/Mentors Once a week for one hour after dinner, the residents meet with volunteers for assistanc e with studying for the GED, learning computer and job skills, and basic math and English skills. We provide instructions and directions for all tutors, pairing each resident individually with a tutor in a specific area, and we meet at the St. Joseph Public Library. This opportunity is open to all individuals, and this is great way to make a difference in your community using your individual talents and interests. Group Service Projects Many groups volunteer at Dismas, working on special projects such as cleaning, painting, landscaping and special events. These projects, whether one-time or ongoing, are wonderful service opportunities for student groups, social clubs and religious groups while helping Dismas meet the needs of our residents. Other Volunteer Opportunities We are always in need of volunteers to bring their special skills to help residents. We have numerous community members who offer services teaching residents about computers, job interviewing and other relevant skills. We also need volunteers who can help with house repairs.
